Blog Questions

Some weeks ago, people were tagging one another to answer some questions about why and how they were keeping their blogs. Nobody tagged me, but I decided to answer those questions anyway, as I'm proud to have my own little place on the web.

Why did you start blogging in the first place?

I first started blogging in-house, to exchange experiences and promote web standards internally in my company. Later on, around 2012, I wanted to share my posts more widely, and also to showcase some of my side projects.

Although I don't write as often as I wanted to, I cherish my small personal website, and I'm proud to "own my content".

What platform are you using to manage your blog and why did you choose it? Have you blogged on other platforms before?

My first website was done in pure, crafted HTML/CSS. Around 2018, I believe, I "improved" my way of working by using Eleventy, but still crafting my HTML and CSS. Eleventy allows me to better control the website's general data, leaving more time to dedicate myself on the content and the design.

How do you write your posts? For example, in a local editing tool, or in a panel/dashboard that’s part of your blog?

I was a huge fan of Editorially, and I felt really sorry when it ended. It was so nicely done and useful! A few months ago I started using Obsidian, which has an agreeable interface and is very practical to sort my content. I regret that there's no easy way to share files.

When do you feel most inspired to write?

What inspires me most to write is when I learn something new or when I think I have a sparkle of idea. The problem is that I keep notes, but I thrive to find enough time to put down what I want.

To write, for me, is a disquieting task; as English is not my first language, I'm always asking myself if my phrases are ok, if I'm not making grammatical mistakes, or just being silly.

As I use to say, I speak and I write badly in four languages, but English is the one which I feel more confident to write.

Do you publish immediately after writing, or do you let it simmer a bit as a draft?

It simmers for some time! I also like to give my texts to my sister to read; it gives me confidence when I know she may correct my faults and give me her feedback.

What’s your favorite post on your blog?

I think it is “Love Thy Html”. In this article I talk about why Html is so important and I try to understand why it is not praised or respected by web developers.

Any future plans for your blog? Maybe a redesign, a move to another platform, or adding a new feature?

I have lots of plans for my site! I want to do a complete redesign and add a dark version. I also have to check why my webmentions are not working as they should.
