The set for a passengers' cabin represents the willing atmosphere of the sets of the A series. There should be plenty of welcoming sunlight and coziness – “adequate” enough so they would not pay attention to the stern. However, as the tension of the narrative builds, the light gets heavier, shadows gain substance, and the easygoing ambiance disappears to reflect the tension of the evolving events.
In the “common areas”, reality is just the veneer that hides the surreal which is only suggested.
Besides the use of light, minor tricks were added to the models in order to give them surrealistic touches, mainly by combining elements of zero to little probability of occurrence and out of the usual context, which lead to intriguing disconnections from the whole and imposing an urge for order.
These ideas formed the basis of the whole set design study which I tried to put into images – the thin gap between what is real and what is fantasy.
